About

It took creeping phlox and a chance encounter…

I am an amateur gardener, perhaps even, an accidental one.  I live on wooded four acres with my husband and our diva German Shepherd.  Content for years to get by with the typical evergreen foundation plants in the front of our house, I stumbled into this obsession accidentally one day last spring, when I had the sudden urge for some color.  I stopped in at our local hardware store (thankfully, not a big-box one) to browse the small nursery there for some pink phlox.  I was greeted by the new garden center manager and was instantly taken with her friendly enthusiasm and plant knowledge.   I knew too, that I was talking to a real gardener; one that practiced what she preached.  That chance encounter with someone who is truly passionate about gardening was enough to change my attitude.  Suddenly, what was once a mundane chore, became an exciting, new adventure.  I bought the phlox, but I was back the next day for more— strange, new things like foxglove, scotch broom, verbena, clematis.

Once I started digging and planting, I couldn’t stop, and thus began the obsession…

Four Acre Obsession is my gardening journal, among other things, to share.   Enjoy.
